Zeke is a 10 year old boy who is fascinated by subjects of knights, dragons, battles, heroes, and villains. As a reward for his good grades, his brother gives him the Cannon Slingshot, a toy cannon that also serves as a slingshot. Pleased by the gift, he immediately tries to see how the toy works. Zeke places one hand around the base and grip portion of the cannon, while using his other hand to place a finger inside the firing mechanism, indicated by a noose. He pulls the noose and sees the ball fly into the air while white powder puffs out of the cannon. Extremely pleased at the performance of his new toy, he then takes another ball and places more powder inside the cannon to reset it for use again and again.
User Group: 10-14
Visibility: The cannon ball and stretched out rubber band can be seen through the slit of the cannon, and the noose suggests placing a finger inside to pull the locking mechanism in order to slingshot the ball.
Affordance: Children at this age would have had experience playing around flinging rubber bands and also would have experience with an object that required you place a finger and pull with in order to make the toy/object work.
Feedback: White powder and the projectile come out of the cannon when you pull the locking mechanism out of the cannon.
Mapping: By having the lock/firing mechanism have a different material and colour from the rest of the object, it has more emphasis placed on it being the major piece to make the object function.
